Volkswagen Golf - the eighth generation of the model submitted in October 2019, and in December the new product went on sale in Germany.

The three-door version is no more - in the eighth iteration of the "Golf" is offered only in a five-door body. Despite a different design of the front end, different forms of stampings on the doors and fenders, new bumpers and a modified fifth door, the car retained the proportions and profile of its predecessor. In addition, the dimensions have not changed much: the increase in length was only 26 mm (4284 m), the hatchback has become 36 mm lower (1456 mm), and the width has not changed at all (1789 mm). The wheelbase was 2636 mm, which is 16 mm more than before.

The car is built on a modified MQB platform. The front suspension is with McPherson struts, while the rear is different depending on the powertrain. So, on low-power versions with engines up to 150 hp. a semi-dependent scheme with a twisting beam was used, and on more productive ones - a multi-link. At the same time, for a surcharge, electronically controlled shock absorbers are available for the model, as well as a steering mechanism with a variable rack ratio.

All external lighting equipment of the new Golf is LED already in the basic configuration; optionally, matrix LED headlights are installed on the hatchback. Wheels can be 15-, 16-, 17- and even 18-inch. But the volume of the trunk has not changed and is still 380 liters. Of course, the back of the second row is folded separately and forms a flat area, and in the underground there is a place for rolling.

One of the main highlights of the Golf VIII was the "digital cockpit" in standard equipment and the almost complete replacement of physical buttons and switches with touch panels. The dashboard is drawn on a 10.25-inch display, and a touchscreen of 8.25 or 10 inches is installed to the right of it, with which you can control the media system, climate control and other functions. You can change the settings for displaying information on the displays, as well as choose the color of the interior contour lighting, if one is included in the equipment. In addition, a head-up display has been added to the list of options.

It is curious that all the USB connectors in the cabin of the new Golf are Type-C by default, and on versions with automatic transmissions, instead of the usual lever, there is now a miniature joystick. Even such an element familiar to the brand's cars as a rotating light switch to the left of the steering wheel has given way to an island of touch buttons, a sliding panoramic roof is controlled by a touch strip, and ceiling lighting is controlled by gestures. The list of additional options also includes three-zone climate control and Harman/Kardon acoustics.

Cars for the EU countries are equipped with an automatic braking system by default, and for a surcharge, the IQ.Drive complex is offered, which is an adaptive cruise control, supplemented by a lane keeping function. These systems operate at speeds up to 210 km / h. In addition, the new Golf is the first Volkswagen to have a data exchange system between vehicles and the Car2X infrastructure as standard. The car can warn in advance of a problem on the road ahead, however, while the range of the complex is limited to 800 meters.

The VIII generation Volkswagen Golf entered European markets with a wide choice of engines. These are gasoline turbo engines from the EA211 Evo family: a three-cylinder 1.0 TSI (90 or 110 hp) and a four-cylinder 1.5 TSI (130 or 150 hp), known from the previous model, with the function of deactivating two cylinders at low loads. Gearboxes: new six-speed "mechanics" or seven-speed "robot" DSG with two clutches.

There are also eTSI versions - these are the so-called "soft" hybrids with an auxiliary 48-volt on-board network. The internal combustion engines in such machines are supplemented by a belt-driven starter-generator and a compact lithium-ion battery. This option is offered for versions with a capacity of 110, 130 or 150 hp, but only in combination with a DSG “robot”. The electric motor helps the gasoline unit in the first seconds of acceleration and starts it as part of the start / stop system. Claimed fuel economy is up to 10% on the WLTP cycle.

The Germans did not forget about diesel engines either. The range includes a new 2.0 TDI turbo unit (115 or 150 hp) with a urea neutralization system, and 4Motion all-wheel drive is available for a more powerful modification. And in addition to the petrol and diesel versions, Volkswagen has prepared two full-fledged hybrids with the possibility of recharging from a “socket”. Both modifications are equipped with a 1.4 TSI turbo engine, a six-speed DSG gearbox with an integrated electric motor, and a 13 kWh battery (the previous model had 8.7 kWh). The base Golf eHybrid develops up to 204 hp, while the GTE version is capable of 245 hp.

In Ukraine, according to preliminary information, the VIII generation Volkswagen Golf will appear only in 2020, and the engine range will be completely different from that of our Western neighbors. So, the “aspirated” 1.6 MPI (110 hp) will become the base one, and the 1.4 TSI turbo engine (150 hp) will serve as an alternative to it. They will be combined with the classic Aisin "automatic" six or eight steps. Whether there will be versions with “mechanics” is not yet known.
