Volkswagen Touareg 2018 - the third generation of the flagship crossover Volkswagen submitted March 23, 2018 at a special event in Beijing.
Prototypes of the new car arrived on their own for a presentation in China from Bratislava, having covered more than 16,000 kilometers. The journey took 21 days, and the route passed along the roads of Slovakia, Austria, Czech Republic, Poland, Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia, Russia, Kazakhstan, Mongolia and China. During the trip, the temperature outside changed from -23 to +21 °С, and the coating under the wheels of new cars changed from smooth asphalt of European roads to complete impassability in the steppes of Kazakhstan and Mongolia.
The new "Tuareg" expectedly inherited the design of the Beijing concept T Prime GTE, with which Volkswagen "tested the soil" two years before the launch of the production model. From the showcar there is a slightly simplified, but still the same huge and generously decorated with chrome grille, developed sidewalls and thin taillights in the style of Audi. And it has become larger in all respects except height: 77 mm longer (4878 mm) and 44 mm wider (1984 mm). The wheelbase increase was 3 mm (up to 2895 mm), and the trunk of the Tuareg grew by 113 liters - from 697 to 810 liters. At the same time, the car even “lost weight” a little – thanks to an increase in the proportion of aluminum in the body to 48%, the weight of the crossover decreased by 106 kg.
The “third” Volkswagen Touareg was built on the same MLB Evo platform that previously formed the basis of the Porsche Cayenne, Audi Q7, Bentley Bentayga and Lamborghini Urus. The engine here is located longitudinally in the front overhang, a double wishbone suspension is installed at the front, a multi-link at the rear, springs are provided in the basic version, and for an extra charge - air struts that regulate the clearance in the range from +70 to -25 mm from the middle position and can lower the rear by 40 mm part of the body during loading.
In addition, electromechanical active anti-roll bars and rear wheel thrusters are offered as an option for the Tuareg. At speeds up to 37 km/h, they turn out of phase with the front wheels, reducing the turning circle per meter (to 11.19 m), while at faster speeds, the rear wheels turn in the same direction as the front wheels, increasing stability. Models of the previous generation could not boast of such systems.
And the third-generation Volkswagen Touareg was the first Volkswagen to receive a fully digital Innovision Cockpit instrument panel. It is provided for top-end performances and consists of two "tools" - the Digital Cockpit virtual instrument panel (12-inch display with a resolution of 1920 × 720 pixels) and the new Discover Pro multimedia complex with a 15-inch display (1920 × 1020 pixels). The media system display also includes climate control keys, as well as icons for turning on / off ventilation, heating and seat massage. However, the Germans did not completely abandon physical switches - the “drum” on the central tunnel controls the volume of the media system, the left “washer” controls the electronic assistant modes, the right one controls the air suspension positions. And the basic versions completely retained the usual dashboard, a small multimedia display and a separate climate control unit.
The list of options includes: matrix LED headlights (128 diodes in each headlight), head-up display, Wi-Fi access point, multi-contour chairs with massage and a night vision camera. Electronics keeps the car in the lane, warns about traffic in dead zones and acts as an "autopilot" when driving in traffic jams at speeds up to 60 km/h.
The back row of the Tuareg is adjustable longitudinally in the range of 160 mm, and the backrests have three fixed positions for the angle of inclination. The interior decoration uses fabric or genuine leather, as well as wood, aluminum and chrome. Three themes are provided: Atmosphere (warm), Elegance (cold) and sporty R-Line. "Ambient" illumination works in 30 shades, for a surcharge a panoramic roof with a length of 1270 mm and a width of 825 mm is installed.
The new version of the Touareg was left without a transmission with a mechanical center differential. There is no longer a “lower” and a rear differential lock, and the all-wheel drive is made in the likeness of the Cayenne soplatform: a multi-plate clutch distributes torque along the axes (up to 70% of traction can be transmitted to the front axle and up to 80% to the rear). The off-road package provides four driving modes: Auto, Sand, Gravel and Off-Road Expert, reinforced engine compartment protection and a fuel tank increased from 75 to 90 liters. The depth of the ford to be overcome with a conventional suspension is 490 mm, and with pneumatic elements - 570 mm.
For the new 2018 Volkswagen Touareg in Europe, two V6 diesel engines will first be available: 231 hp. (torque 500 Nm) and 286 hp (600 Nm). Some markets will feature V6 petrol engines with 340 hp. (450 Nm) and V8 turbodiesel with 421 hp. (900 Nm). Over time, plug-in hybrids with a 367 hp power plant will be sold in China, but whether they will appear in Europe is not yet known. All motors are combined by default with an eight-speed ZF automatic and all-wheel drive.
